Interview of Dr Kannabiran, veteran trade union and communist leader from Gudiyatam, Tamil Nadu. Born in 1914, in a lower middle class family, he got influenced by Periyar in his early teens. Later he joined AISF. In October 1948, the communist party started a mass campaign, asking the management to celebrate the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. The management refused and police unleashed violence on the protesters. He also said that the Communists never counter attacked Gandhi in Gudiyattam, that had strong nationalist traditions. |
